FAQ, UK casting terminology and process

What is a 2nd in a film casting?

A 2nd is a second-team performer, a stand-in matched to a principal cast member by height, build, hair and skin tone. They stand in during lighting, blocking and camera rehearsal so the principal can rest or be in hair / makeup. Featured 2nds are also cast for stunt rehearsal and pre-rigging.

What is the difference between SA, junior SA and featured SA?

SA (Supporting Artist) is the BECTU term for what is also called an extra or background performer. Featured SA are foregrounded, sometimes briefly recognisable on camera and paid at a higher rate. Junior SA usually refers to child supporting artists, licensed and chaperoned under UK child performance law.

Do you cast children for shoots in the UK?

Yes. We hold borough Child Performance Licences, work with licensed chaperones and follow the Children (Performances and Activities) (England) Regulations 2014, including tutor hours, breaks, daily working limits and parental consent. We cast babies, toddlers, primary-age and teenagers across all UK regions.

Can you cast a large crowd or a flash-mob style dance ensemble?

Yes, regularly. Large crowds of 250, 500 or more are routine, including dance ensembles for music videos in landmark UK locations. Choreographer, rehearsals, costume, chaperones (if minors) and on-the-day SA coordination are all handled.

Do you cast for Bollywood, Indian and South Asian productions?

Yes, that is a core part of our work. Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam and Gujarati productions, with British-South Asian and diaspora talent across London, Birmingham, Leicester, Manchester and Bradford, plus direct casting in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Hyderabad.

What rates do you work to?

PACT-Equity for UK SA and principals, BECTU for crew, SAG-AFTRA for US co-productions, FAA / IFTPC for India. Buyouts and usage negotiated per project, broadcast, online, in-perpetuity, territory and media all priced transparently in the offer letter.

How fast can you turn a casting around?

Same-day character breakdowns, 24-hour shortlists from agencies, 48-hour self-tapes. Crowd and dance ensembles can be cast inside a week for most UK cities. Rush briefs welcome.

Where in the UK do you cast?

Everywhere. London is our base, but we cast regularly across Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, Leicester, Nottingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. Regional shoots get regional faces, we don't bus London talent to Birmingham unless the brief calls for it.
